Bertha Ellen HONEY (1857-1890)

Bertha was the eldest child of Thomas and Jemima Honey. She was born c.1857 in Duloe. On 1 August 1880, she married James Dawe, a seaman, at Stoke Dameral in Devon. They had at least two children together: James Thomas (b.1881) and Ellie (b.1886).

In 1881, Bertha was living at 38 Albert Road, Stoke Dameral, Devon with her son, James. Her husband was presumably away at sea. Also in the household was Bertha's sister, Leah, who's surname Giddy indicates she too had married by 1881.

Bertha's death in 1890 was a complete mystery, even after acquiring the death certificate as the majority of it is unfortunately illegible. After making some enquiries, the Cornish Studies Library in Redruth found an entry Cornish Times newspaper. An extract is given below:

About half-past eight on Tuesday morning [11 February 1890] a married woman named Bertha Ellen Dawe...committed suicide by hanging herself to the banister of the stairs at the residence of her father, Mr. Thomas Honey... The inquest was held... [returning] a verdict of 'suicide whilst of unsound mind'.
