Jane HAMLEY (1799-1861)

Jane was born on 15 August 1799. Daughter of George Hamley and Ann Rundall, she was christened on 8 September 1799 at St John, Brook Street Independent Church in Tavistock.

On 8 May 1820, she was married to Samuel Kellaway at St Eustachius Church in Tavistock.  At some point, probably during 1840, Jane and her family moved from Devon to Bristol, where she remained for the rest of her life.

Jane died on 23 January 1861 in Clifton, Bristol.  A death notice from 2 February 1861 reads: 23 January aged 61, Jane the beloved wife of Mr. Samuel Kellaway, sen. at Oakfield Place Clifton, deeply regretted by her family and friends.

Her husband Samuel may have never recovered from his wife’s death, drowning in the River Froom in July of the same year after drinking heavily.
